What Is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a form of exfoliating treatment that removes a buildup of the dead skin cells off the top layer of the skin.

Types of Microdermabrasion Treatments

There are two types of microdermabrasion treatments available: Crystal Microdermabrasion and Diamond Microdermabrasion.

During Crystal Microdermabrasion aluminum oxide or sodium bicarbonate crystals are sprayed out of a crystal-emitting handpiece to gently exfoliate the dead skin cells that are immediately vacuumed away together with crystals through the same hand-piece.

Through the course of Diamond Microdermabrasion instead of using crystals to exfoliate the skin, a diamond-tip wand is used to gently exfoliate and vacuum away the dead skin cells.

What is better? Diamond or Crystal Microdermabrasion?

Both forms of microdermabrasion provide similar results. The skin is deeply exfoliated and feels softer and smoother immediately after the treatment. At EZ Beauty we use a Diamond Microdermabrasion machine simply because it is less messy, there are no crystals left behind and there is no chance of you inhaling or getting them into your eyes or mouth. We can control the intensity and depth of a treatment with wands of different sizes and levels of coarseness and because there is no risk of ingestion, the treatment can be performed closer to the eyes and mouth.

Benefits of getting Microdermabrasion Treatments

Immediately after the treatment your skin will fill softer, smoother and will look more radiant.
Microdermabrasion can be used to diminish the following conditions:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Dark spots, sun damage, pigmentation
  • Dull, uneven and coarsely textured skin
  • Enlarged pores, blackheads and whiteheads
  • Acne and acne scars

In addition to the typical exfoliation benefits, the vacuum mechanism stimulates cell metabolism and blood flow. Microdermabrasion also helps to boost collagen production to provide firming and toning to the skin.

Who Shouldn’t get Microdermabrasion?

If you have any of these conditions, you shouldn’t get Microdermabrasion or should postpone you treatment until you condition improves:

  • Active infection of any type, such as Herpes simplex virus or flat warts/Active Inflammatory Acne/Sunburn or Windburn
  • Use of Accutane within the last year
  • Chemical peel or laser treatment within 7-14 days depending upon strength of peel or laser
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, Eczema, Dermatitis, Skin cancer
  • Rosacea
  • Family history of hypertrophic scarring or keloid formation
  • Injections or fillers in the area treated within 2 weeks

Local Contraindications

The treatment will not be stopped but the effected areas might need to be avoided:

  • Cuts/abrasions/broken skin
  • Bruises or swelling
  • Skin tags, Recent Broken capillaries or veins.

How to prepare for the treatment?

Don’t use any strong alpha hydroxy, beta hydroxy acids or retinol for 3-4 days up to a week prior to the treatment. Avoid waxing in the area to be treated 24 hours before your procedure.

What to expect after the treatment

Microdermabrasion is not an invasive procedure, so there is no downtime after the treatment. Your skin could get a little red which often subsides within couple of hours after the treatment. Sometimes light flaking or peeling could happen. You can return to work or your normal daily activities immediately after the procedure.

Aftercare instructions

Working out or vigorous physical activity should be avoided until all redness has subsided.

Direct sunlight exposure is to be completely avoided immediately following the treatment (including any strong UV light exposure and tanning beds). If some sun exposure cannot be avoided, apply SPF 30 sunscreen, wear a hat and make sure you reapply every 2 hours. Although sunscreen should be a part of your daily skin care, for a minimum of two weeks, a sunscreen with at least SPF of 30 must be applied.

Avoid using any harsh exfoliating products for a week. Don’t use any retinol, alpha hydroxy or beta hydroxy acids for 3-4 days up to a week, depending on how sensitive your skin is. Use gentle cleanser and moisturize twice a day.

If a site other than the face is treated, you only need to cleanse once daily, followed by sunscreen.

How often should you get it done? Which areas can be treated?

Depending on your skin condition, we recommend repeating diamond microdermabrasion at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks to achieve a consistent result. For problem skin you might want to shorten the intervals to 2 weeks between treatments, until the appearance of your skin has improved significantly, and then can be done once a month to maintain the results.

Generally, the treatment can be performed on all areas of the body. The most common treatment zones are the face, neck, decolletage and back.
